You may have read the article in the Pasadena Star News/San Gabriel Valley Tribune. The City of Monrovia sells the Wiggly Wranch worm bin to Monrovia Residents for $55 (includes worms) at the Public Works Department’s City Yard, located at 600 S. Mountain Avenue. Staff is available to assist with worm and compost bin purchases from Monday to Thursday from 7 am to 6 p.m. and on Friday’s from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please call (626) 932-5553 in advance to ensure bins are currently in stock.
Staff will order your worms once the bin has been purchased and set-up by the resident. Once the worms are delivered, staff notifies the resident by email or phone and requests immediate pick-up by the resident.

What if I want to make my own Worm Bin?
Many internet websites provide instructions on how to make your own worm bin using wood or plastic storage containers with ventilation holes that you drill into them. If you do not have access to the Internet, the local library and or bookstore should have a copy of “Worms Eat My Garbage” by Mary Applehof. It also contains information on how to build a worm bin. Whatever method you choose to use, make sure that the worms have enough air to breathe and that your worms are sufficiently contained in the bin you create.
Where can I buy worms?
Should I add red worms to my Backyard Composter?
No, red worms should only be used in a vermicomposting system for decomposition of your food waste. Backyard Composters can be used for only small amounts of food waste, but are primarily used for decomposition of grass, leaves, and organic material. The City of Monrovia does not promote the use of Backyard Composting for food waste, especially in areas of the city that are frequently visited by wildlife (bears, mountain lions, raccoons, etc.).
Where can I purchase a Backyard Composting Bin?
The City of Monrovia’s Public Works Department also sells Backyard Composting bins at a discounted rate of $30. Bins can be purchased at the Public Works Department’s City Yard, located at 600 S. Mountain Avenue. Staff is available to assist with compost bin purchases from Monday to Thursday from 7 am to 6 pm and on Friday’s from 8 am to 5 pm. Please call (626) 932-5553 in advance to ensure bins are currently in stock.
Where can I learn more about Backyard Composting and Worm Composting?
The County of Los Angeles offers informative workshops on backyard and worm composting, grass recycling, fire-wise and drought tolerant gardening. Please visit the Smart Gardening website for more information and a schedule of composting workshops.
The City of Monrovia hosts a Backyard Composting Workshop annually in the fall.
