Green Materials

The City of Monrovia and Athens Services have developed a new waste collection and recycling program designed to make the City's residential waste and recycling services more environmentally friendly. The most important part of this new program is the conversion of your current manual green waste collection to a new automated green waste collection system.

The following items may be placed in your Green Barrel:

  • Grass Clippings
  • Leaves
  • Brush
  • Branches
  • Tree Trimmings
  • Other organic material less than 3 inches in diameter or 3 feet in length generated from landscapes or gardens.

NO Palm fronds, yucca leaves, bamboo, rocks, dirt or trash in green barrels. If found, barrels will be tagged and not picked up until the contamination is removed.

What is GrassCycling? Grasscycling is the natural recycling of grass by leaving clippings on the lawn after mowing.  Grass clippings decompose quickly, returning valuable nutrients back into the soil.  Grass clippings make up a large portion of California's waste stream. Increasingly, as California communities work to reach the State mandate to cut the amount of trash sent to the landfills, they are using grass cycling to reduce the amount of green material generated in urban landscapes.
