Backyard and Worm Composting

The City of Monrovia Environmental Services  promotes waste reduction through its Backyard Composting Program, by offering workshops and bin sales throughout the year.

What kind of compost bin best suits your needs?

Backyard Composting

Are you interested in decreasing the amount of grass, yard clippings, and organic waste from your yard? We sell the Garden Gourmet compost bin to Monrovia residents at a subsidized price of $40 (limit one bin per resident, prices subject to change). Backyard composters produce a rich fertilizer that is great for gardens or soil amendment. Adding food waste to backyard composting bins in areas frequented by wildlife is not recommended. For availability, call Environmental Services at (626) 932-5553 or 5556. In the event that bins are out of stock, your name will be placed on a waiting list and you will be notified as soon as bins become available.

 Vermicomposting (Worm Composting)

Are you interested in composting food waste? A pound of red worms will eat a pound of food waste a day (they eat everything except for meat, dairy and acidic or spicy foods), helping to decrease the amount of waste sent to local landfills. Worms produce castings (a rich organic fertilizer great for your garden) and a liquid fertilizer, aka worm tea (use on houseplants and your garden). Worm bins are typically used in homes with 1 to 4 people. Worms are self-sufficient and will gear their population to the amount of food waste provided. They do need a home that maintains an average temperature of 70 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit and will not be exposed to pesticides or car exhaust. The Worm Factory bin is available to Monrovia residents for discounted cost of $65 (prices subject to change). Once your bin is set up at home, red worms can be purchased for shipment directly to your home from VermiPRO at www.vermipro.com or call (714) 647-1275.
