Minimize Trash - Save Money, Help the Environment!
Only the following items should be placed in the black 60- or 90-gallon trash container: non-recyclable garbage, food wastes, pet wastes, palm fronds, yucca leaves, kitty litter and anything with food residue left on it. The following items may NOT be placed in the trash container: rocks, soil, construction and demolition debris, liquid waste (cooking oil and grease), household hazardous waste, CFL's or fluorescent light bulbs, electronic waste (VCR's, cell phones, computers, microwaves, etc.), household and automobile batteries, and medical wastes (sharps, needles, and lancets).

Consider this...if you recycle, you not only help the environment, but you can also save money by downsizing from a 90 gallon container to a less expensive 60-gallon container. Going to the smaller 60-gallon container can save you money!

For questions or more information regarding residential refuse services, please contact Environmental Services at (626) 932-5553 or 932-5556. Athens Services customer service call center may be reached at alt(888) 336-6100.

Bear Resistant Trash Barrels
Bear resistant barrels are available from Athens Services for residents who wish to prevent trash barrel from being broken into by bears. Residents who subscribe to this service will be provided one (1) black 90-gallon bear resistant barrel in lieu of a traditional trash barrel. Prior to barrel delivery, enrollees will be required to sign a 36 month program participation agreement form with Athens Services for 36 monthly payments of $4.99 per month, per barrel. This rate is in addition to the monthly service rate. Barrels will remain the property of Athens Services at all times.

In order for the barrels to receive automated service, the lid must be unlocked by the customer prior to service. Setting unlocked barrels out the morning of collection rather than the night prior will help to reduce the number of trash barrels from being broken into by bears. To have Athens Services driver unlock the barrel, rather than the homeowner, an additional $5.51 monthly fee for unlock service is available upon request.

For additional information on the Bear Resistant Barrel program or a copy of the 36-month program participation
agreement form please visit Athens Services website or call 1-888-336-6100.

zardous Waste:
Througout Los Angeles County on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and electronic waste (e-waste) are collected at various locations. To participate, residents may gather their HHW or e-waste and bring it to any of the round-ups or permanent collection centers.

For a complete list of events and permanent collection centers visit www.888CleanLA.com
or call 1-888-CLEAN LA (1-888-253-2652).

Stormwater Management
After a rainstorm, have you ever watched a leaf float down the gutter and out of sight? Have you ever wondered where it goes? Well, a leaf or anything else that goes into a storm water drain in Monrovia can make an incredible journey all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The leaf using the long and complex storm drain system can be carried by rainwater away from our homes, streets and businesses.

Unlike the sewer system, which carries water from indoor drains to water treatment plants, the storm water drain system releases water into the ocean untreated. This means any trash or hazardous chemicals which are dumped into the storm drain system in Monrovia can pollute our important water resources, beaches and marine wildlife along the coast. Urban runoff pollution contaminates the ocean, closes beaches, harms aquatic life and increases the risk of inland flooding by clogging gutters and catch basins. 100 million gallons of polluted urban runoff enters the Pacific Ocean untreated each day, leaving toxic chemicals in our surf and tons of trash on our beaches.

What can you do to prevent storm water pollution?

  • Perform routine maintenance on vehicles to prevent leaks from oil and other car fluids.
  • Keep absorbent materials handy to allow prompt cleanup of all spills. Don't hose down oil spills into gutters or drains.
  • Wash vehicles with biodegradable, phosphate-free detergents. Use a bucket (not a running hose) to wash and rinse your car to conserve water.
  • Properly dispose of used oil, hydraulic transmission, and radiator fluids at a Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
  • Don't blow or rake leaves into streets, gutters, or storm drains.
  • Use organic or non-toxic fertilizers. Don't over fertilize and don't fertilize near ditches, streams, or other water bodies.
  • Use non-toxic pesticide alternatives whenever possible.
  • Never clean paintbrushes or rinse paint containers into a street, gutter, or storm drain.
